Schools in Lisbon, Portugal participating in the Schneider Electric EnergySTEP@Work pilot program are applying their energy cost savings to capital improvements and teacher training initiatives. “In the 21st century, being connected and green should not have to be a trade off. ICT has the potential to be the basis for helping us achieve our end goal: to be carbon neutral and energy self-sufficient in every school in the country.” – João Fernandes, Director of Information Systems for Parque Escolar, a public company formed to implement the high school infrastructure modernization

People-centric unified energy management solution makes it possible

Schneider Electric EnergySTEP@Work is a comprehensive ICT energy management program that consolidates energy consumption via a single, unified IP network, enabling real-time energy monitoring and management.

    Successes included:

    • Energy reductions at the pilot schools provided significant cost savings that have been applied to capital improvements, teacher trainings, and other initiatives.
    • Centralized control policies for ICT, lighting, and HVAC at one school yielded a 25% reduction in energy use, a savings of approximately $13,200 (USD) per year.
    • EnergySTEP@Work also provided on-site learning opportunities. Students acted as testers and evaluators and also took part in end-to-end solution deployment and configuration, which served as the basis of their final year degree project.
    • Many students have changed their energy use behaviors and how they think about the future.
